I've told all my clients to stop doing this...

Stop doing this!

I know you're probably thinking, what do you want me to stop doing?

With a new year, there are always new things we want to tackle. And for homeowners, there are things that you can stop doing when it comes time to sell your home. Now I wanted to tell you to stop doing this one thing...but I can’t stop with just one…so I will share at least two things to stop doing.

1. Stop leaving family photos up or nude pictures. They do two things to your home that you don’t want people to notice:

a. They clutter up the walls or sofa tables or wherever you have them. And as we all know, clutter is a big no-no when it comes to getting your house sold.

b. It’s too personal and we need to depersonalize the home. We want the buyers to envision THEMSELVES in the house. They can’t do that when you have pictures of yourselves, grandkids, etc everywhere. Start removing them now. It’s the easiest thing you can do to help sell your house faster.

However, if you don’t have anything on your walls, you need to have something. I have a free ebook you can download on "How to decorate your walls like an adult". Lots of times homeowners don’t know how to hang artwork correctly and in this ebook, I share tips and tricks and how to best hang up your artwork and places where you can find “adult-looking decor”. You can download the ebook right here.

2. Stop re-painting your dining room walls red…or yellow. Those are the worst colors you can paint. It’s hard to take pictures of a room with red or yellow wall paint. It needs to be neutral so that any color can go with it. A neutral wall color will appeal to more buyers while a red wall color can turn them off.

If you need help picking out wall colors, I have a freebie called "4 best living room wall colors". I use these colors for living rooms, but nowadays dining rooms and living rooms almost melt into each other and they might as well be one room. You don’t need to distinguish each room with a different wall color. You can separate them easily by adding a rug or furniture to separate and show off the space. You can download the 4 best living wall colors here.

And that’s when we get into trouble with losing things that you didn’t realize are still in there. This past week I worked on cleaning out my pantry and I want to give you some tips and tricks I used during this pantry cleanout and challenge you to a Pantry Cleanout...

Happy Thanksgiving! I know some of you are getting ready for Thanksgiving (as are we). Our oldest daughter is coming home from college for a few days of home-cooked meals and then heads back to play in the NCSU Band for the UNC vs NCSU game on Saturday. So it's a whirlwind of activities here. We managed to get a lot of the Fall home maintenance done around the house as we settle into "winter" here in North Carolina. It doesn't get that cold here but there are a few things that need to get...
